ABOUT THE PROJECT
This creative initiative marks the 118th anniversary of Puhua School (Sekolah 3 Bahasa Putera Harapan) by developing four custom 3D brand mascots. Inspired by the legendary Chinese mythological creature, the Qilin, each mascot embodies the school’s core values: Qin Qin (Diligence), Cheng Cheng (Sincerity), Pu Pu (Simplicity), and Yi Yi (Persistence). The project spans from initial conceptual sculpting to fully realized dynamic 3D character animations.
THE CHALLENGE
Translating Intangible Heritage Into Systemic Gameplay Mechanics
Translating deep, complex, and often abstract intangible cultural heritage into structured, functional tabletop game mechanics presents a unique creative hurdle.
Key challenges included:
Simplifying complex traditional Qilin anatomy into clean, stylized 3D meshes
Expressing specific human virtues (diligence, sincerity, simplicity, persistence) through distinct character expressions
Developing flexible skeleton rigging suitable for diverse and fluid animation sequences
Balancing vibrant cultural color palettes with the school’s established corporate identity

OUR APPROACH
Cultural Character Study And Comprehensive 3d Pipeline
Executing a complete character pipeline beginning with cultural research and structural 3D modeling. We crafted distinct facial features and proportions for each mascot, engineered robust rigging for expressive movement, and produced character animations that brought the school's core philosophies to life.
VISUAL DIRECTION
The visual direction centers on "Expressive 3D Storytelling" that is both culturally authentic and modern. Inspired by the traditional aesthetic of Chinese mythology, the creative language transforms the complex elements of the Qilin into stylized, clean 3D character meshes with softer textures. The tone is vibrant and cheerful, utilizing a warm, primary-based color palette tailored to resonance with an academic audience. Lighting is soft and volumetric, making the characters feel touchable and alive, while facial proportions are exaggerated to enhance readability of their distinct core virtues across diverse digital screen.
DESIGN SYSTEM
A bespoke 3D character framework was developed to maintain technical efficiency across four distinct personalities.

Character Bible & Palettes: Strict guidelines for color distribution, proportions, and symbolic textures unique to Qin Qin, Cheng Cheng, Pu Pu, and Yi Yi.
Unified Rigging Skeleton: A comprehensive, single master rigging structure engineered to support expressive facial blendshapes and fluid, complex animation sequences for all four bipedal mascots.
Asset Library & Texture Masters: Optimized 3D model meshes, shader graphs for stylized fur and scales, and reusable texture master maps for streamlined render workflows.
Animation Library: template sets for character behavior, from confident walks and diligent poses to persistence-driven gestures, ensuring brand continuity across motion work.

A Dynamic 3D Mascot System For Modern Educational Branding And Identity
The final solution successfully integrates deep mythological symbolism with a modern corporate identity for the school. By materializing abstract virtues into high-fidelity, fully animated 3D mascots, the project provides Puhua School with a versatile visual branding system. These characters are fully optimized for promotional campaigns, interactive digital media, and campus identity touchpoints, creating a strong emotional connection with students while setting a premium creative standard for the institution’s 118th-anniversary release.
